Frequently asked questions
Everything people commonly ask before or after signing up for Lexis Defender.
General
What is Lexis Defender?▼
Lexis Defender is an AI-powered legal assistant for people representing themselves in court. It provides a workspace for legal research, document drafting, court deadline tracking, and case strategy planning.
Is this legal advice?▼
No. Lexis Defender is an informational and drafting tool, not a law firm. Using it does not create an attorney-client relationship. Nothing on the site or in the application constitutes legal advice. Always consult a licensed attorney in your state for advice specific to your situation.
Who is Lexis Defender for?▼
People navigating the legal system without an attorney — often called pro se or self-represented litigants. Common users are handling traffic citations, misdemeanor charges, civil disputes, small claims, landlord-tenant matters, or probation conditions on their own.
What states does Lexis Defender support?▼
Kansas is the primary launch state with the deepest content coverage. Court system profiles exist for all 50 states. AI chat can address federal and multi-state questions. Additional state-specific content is being added continuously.
How it works
How does the AI know about my case?▼
After you complete a case intake, Lexis Defender uses your case details — charges, state, county, court date, and narrative — to contextualize every AI response. You can update your case profile at any time to keep answers relevant.
Can I draft real court documents with it?▼
Yes. The motion and document drafting workspace generates court-ready documents based on your case details and the template you select. You review and edit the draft before saving or downloading it. Documents are informational and you should verify they conform to your local court's formatting rules before filing.
What is court rehearsal?▼
Court rehearsal is a simulated Q&A feature that mimics the kinds of questions a judge or opposing party might ask based on your case type. It helps you practice responding clearly and calmly before your hearing.
What are legal modules?▼
Legal modules are state-specific research playbooks covering procedural steps, common issues, and decision points for specific case types — DUI, probation violation, expungement, civil response, etc. They are pre-built guides loaded with jurisdiction-aware context.
Pricing and account
Is there a free trial?▼
Yes. Every new account includes 5 free AI chat questions with no credit card required. You can use those to explore the platform before choosing a plan.
What plans are available?▼
Basic ($24.99/month), Standard ($39.99/month), Pro ($59.99/month), and Platinum ($149.99/month). Annual billing saves 10%. See the pricing page for a full feature comparison.
Can I pay per document without a subscription?▼
Yes. Document add-on packs (1, 3, or 5 documents) are available as one-time purchases if you need occasional document saves without a monthly plan.
What happens when I run out of chat credits?▼
You will see a message explaining your credits are exhausted and a prompt to upgrade your plan or purchase an add-on. Your case data and saved documents remain accessible.
Can I cancel anytime?▼
Yes. Monthly plans can be cancelled before the next billing cycle. Annual plans include a 10% discount and run for the full year.
Privacy and data
Who can see my case information?▼
Your case data is stored in your private account and is not shared with third parties except as required to operate the service (authentication, AI inference, payment processing). See the privacy policy for full details.
Is my data used to train AI models?▼
Lexis Defender does not sell your data or use your personal case information to train public AI models. Review the privacy policy for the full data use description.
How do I delete my data?▼
You can request data deletion through the data deletion page linked in your account settings or by visiting /data-deletion.
Limitations
What can Lexis Defender NOT do?▼
It cannot represent you in court, give you legal advice, file documents on your behalf, predict outcomes, or guarantee accuracy for any specific legal situation. It is a preparation and research tool only.
Should I use this for serious criminal charges?▼
Lexis Defender can help you prepare, understand terminology, and organize your case — but for serious felony charges, custody battles, immigration consequences, or situations where you face incarceration, you should have qualified legal representation. The stakes are too high to rely on any AI tool alone.
My state isn't fully supported. Can I still use it?▼
Yes. The AI chat is not limited to Kansas. The platform can discuss general federal procedure, help you understand legal concepts, and assist with document drafting in any state. State-specific module coverage is deeper for Kansas than other states currently.
